Joint Steroid Injections for Palliative Pain Relief

Last updated 3 years ago

Steroid injections are used to diagnose and treat a wide array of musculoskeletal condition affecting the joints, bursae, tendon sheaths, and other soft tissues within your body. Joint steroid injections can be used for palliative pain relief by stimulating the sources of pain when properly performed by a specialist.

Uses and Indications

Joint steroid injections can be used to alleviate pain in the shoulder, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle joints. Unlike oral medications that only provide relief for short periods of time, joint steroid injections deliver medication directly to the location causing pain, providing long-lasting pain relief and reducing inflammation.

How to Prepare

While joint steroid injections do not require you to fast or restrict your food and fluid intake, you should inform your doctor of any allergies or medications you are currently taking. It is also crucial to notify your doctor of the presence of internal pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, and any medical conditions that may interfere with your ability to receive contrast dye during your joint steroid or MR arthrography injection.

Procedural Steps

During the procedure you will be instructed to lie down on an examination table while x-rays are taken of the affected joint. The skin near your joint will then be cleansed and sterilized with an antiseptic before a local anesthetic is injected. Your physician or radiologist will then insert a needle into the joint and drain any existing fluid so that it can be sent to a laboratory for analysis. Individuals who require contrast die will receive the injection prior to being escorted to the MRI scanner.
